New LLCs Spike in Wyoming, Raising Financial Crime Concerns

Nearly 600,000 legal entities obtained registration in Wyoming in fiscal year 2023, helping solidify the state's dual, contradictory status as the least populated U.S. state but most densely packed as measured by number of businesses per capita. The total, which includes corporations, general partnerships, sole proprietorships and especially limited liability companies, or LLCs, marks an increase of nearly 50 percent from fiscal year 2021 and has brought Wyoming $42 million in revenue, while also raising questions as to the state's ability to wall the corporate services sector off from criminal abuse.
