German Regulator Targets Virtual IBANs

Germany's financial regulator on Tuesday became the latest EU supervisor to launch a review into how fintechs and other financial institutions manage the illicit finance-related risks associated with virtual international bank account numbers, or virtual IBANs. Virtual IBANs, unique codes of up to 34 characters in length that payment platforms and other fintechs can issue to online merchants and other customers all over the world, leverage "master accounts" at licensed, mainstream banks and digital lenders inside the EU to store and move funds.
