Canada Charges First Individual Under Terrorist Financing Law

Canadian authorities charged a Sri Lankan-born man with raising funds for a terrorist organization, marking the first time Canada has charged an individual with the crime. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia arrested Prapaharan Thambithurai on March 14 for allegedly soliciting funds for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam, or Tamil Tigers, which has been identified by the Canadian government as a terrorist group. Thambithurai targeted Vancouver residents of Sri Lankan heritage to make donations to support the Tamil Tigers, the Canadian police said in a statement.
