Additional Merida Initiative Funding Could Be Earmarked for Mexico’s FIU: Official

U.S. lawmakers may need to earmark more money for Mexico's financial intelligence unit as part of a $1.9 billion aid package intended to help fight drug trafficking, a federal official said Thursday. In a hearing, members of a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee quizzed witnesses on the efficacy of the Merida Initiative, a U.S. plan launched in 2008 to help Mexico fight drug cartels, bolster border security, reform the country's judicial system and train state, local and federal investigators.
